City executive wants to keep funding sexual health counselling until 2031
The association Sexuelle Gesundheit Zürich is to receive CHF 609,900 in 2027 and CHF 659,900 a year from 2028 to 2031. According to the city, syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia are on the rise.
The Stadtrat (city executive) is asking the Gemeinderat (city parliament) to keep funding the association Sexuelle Gesundheit Zürich (SeGZ) for 2027–2031. The association offers information, counselling and treatment to detect sexually transmitted infections (STIs) early and keep them low. According to the city, demand for its counselling has remained high in recent years.
Why
The city says prevention work means fewer people are newly infected with HIV every year. Other STIs such as syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia, however, are increasing. They are now among the most common notifiable infectious diseases in Switzerland, and the canton and city of Zurich are particularly affected.
The association focuses on information and prevention, health promotion and psychosocial support. The contributions allow it to continue and expand its services and adapt them to groups at particular risk.
